Fall down on your knees and worship here. (via)
Good people of Britain, I ask you once again to join me in a short voodoo ritual:
Step 1 – Write down Tony Blair’s full name – Anthony Charles Lynton Blair – on a piece of paper
Step 2 – Draw a line under it
… and then pass this short message on. Thank you.

This is why I don’t bother writing letters to newspapers any more:
So, should I tell SEO ‘expert’ Adam Sherwin about this, or wait until he next goes ego-surfing?
Current events:
BBC – Lib Dems deliver blow to Labour
BBC – Compromise on ID cards expected
Hot on the heels of these recent defeats in the Commons:
Bloggerheads – Religious hatred and Blairite arrogance (Blair’s defeat on Religious Hatred)
Bloggerheads – Here we go (Blair’s defeat on 90-day detention)
I think this calls for a little voodoo, don’t you?
PS – I quiet word to all civil servants who are tentatively fingering incriminating documents.
ABC News – Bush: Al Qaeda Wanted to Hit West Coast: President Bush outlined details of a thwarted terror plot to attack the tallest building on the West Coast, saying the plot shows the United States faces a threat from a determined enemy and that global cooperation is needed to stop it.
BBC – Deal struck on US anti-terror law: US Congress members have reached agreement with the Bush administration to extend the life of a controversial anti-terrorist law.

UPDATE – Independent – LA shoe-bomb plot: Terrorists planned a West Coast 9/11 in 2002: Once again, President George Bush finds himself in deep political trouble. And, once again, he has chosen to invoke the spectre of a terrorist attack on US soil, only to draw immediate suspicion about his motives at the start of what promises to be a long, bruising mid-term election campaign… “Let’s call this what it was,” said Mr Weiss, the Los Angeles city council member. “President Bush is digging out of an extraordinarily large political hole … He’s trying to build support for the NSA [National Security Agency] wiretapping programme and so, to build that support, he dusts off details that are at best three years old, at worst closer to four years old … But this plot was evanescent … and it’s not clear precisely how American assets interrupted the plot. It’s just part of his constant speechifying, to impress upon people what he’s doing in the war on terror.”
Independent – How a meeting of leaders in Mecca set off the cartoon wars around the world: A summit of Muslim nations held in Mecca in December may have played a key role in stoking outraged protests across the Islamic world against a series of caricatures of the Prophet Mohamed. A dossier of the cartoons, which was compiled by Danish Muslims, was handed around the sidelines of the meeting, attended by 57 Islamic nations including leaders such as Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and the Saudi King, Abdullah… Ahmed Akkari, a Lebanese-born Dane and spokesman for a group of Danish Muslims, said the Mecca summit had been the culmination of campaign to publicise the offending cartoons. The group assembled a 43-page dossier that included several unpublished caricatures. However, Mr Akkari denies allegations that the second set of cartoons – which were faxed to Muslim groups by far-right extremists after they protested against the original images – were presented to Muslim leaders without distinction… Mr Akkari said that the violent fallout was not their intention when they compiled the dossier. “We did not expect it to end up in such a situation, and with violence and for people to use it politically. This has now gone further than we had expected.”
A quiet word of advice for Mr Akkari… when the car leaves the ramp and becomes airborne, you will find the steering wheel to be of very little use.

The Times – Shady tactics in battle for internet hits: The top result of a Google search for “liar” is now Tony Blair’s biography on the official Downing Street website. This happened after anti-war “Google-bombers” set up hundreds of sites establishing a link. They exploited Google’s policy of looking at not just the content of a page but also on how often a site is linked to others and with what words.
I think if Adam Sherwin actually bothered to do some research on this, he would have found that the websites involved are all genuine, personal websites… and that the ‘liar’ links involved are based on the genuine, personal opinion(s) held by the people who run these sites.
Grouping this meme with the BMW story (which involves gateway pages) makes no sense whatsoever… unless you’re a witless point-scoring hack with no personal web space of your own and/or no real understanding of search engine optimisation.
Michael Gove is either a complete moron or the worst kind of political weasel… and David Cameron is fast running out of time.
Our story today begins with the ongoing campaign by the Tories to weaken the Liberal Democrats by calling on Lib-Dem MPs and/or voters to join their new and groovy gang…
The Herald – Cameron accused of U-turn over Iraq support: In a letter, endorsed by former LibDems, Mr Cameron wrote: “Issues that once divided Conservatives from Liberal Democrats are now issues where we both agree. Our attitude to devolution and localisation of power. Iraq. The environment. I’m a liberal Conservative.” (hat-tip)
Well, it turned out to be a good thing that Iraq was included as a single-word throw-away with no explanation or context… as it made Michael Gove’s job of dancing around it that much easier. And, in a move that will no doubt delight the Ballroom Confederation, the resulting dance involved no new steps.
Gove appeared on Newsnight last night, billed at “the architect of David Cameron’s conservatism”… and sat right next to Alastair Campbell.
Yes, this is about to get delicious….
Gove began by explaining the Tory position on Iraq as follows:
Michael Gove: The debate about whether we were right to go to war with Iraq is over. As it happens, Alastair and I were on the same side of that debate. We both thought that it was the right thing to do…. The past (was) the argument about whether or not we should have gone to war, the future – which is what David Cameron is talking about – is the sort of Iraq we want… and the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives believe that what we want in Iraq is a democracy and our troops back home as quickly as possible. If there are people who disagree with that view; fair enough.
Sorry Michael, but this game has been played before, and by a better liar than yourself.
Saddam bad. Democracy good. Debate in past. Let’s move on. (PS – You’re welcome to disagree with this view, but if you do, you obviously hold the view that democracy is a bad thing.)
So, what are we to make of David Cameron, Iraq, the past and the future? Well, let’s kick off with the delicious bit from Alastair Campbell…. because it also involves David Cameron, Iraq, the past and the future….
Only a few minutes after discussing Iraq, Campbell said the following regarding David Cameron and Labour’s approach to him as leader, with absolutely no hint of irony:
Alastair Campbell: David Cameron is a relatively new national figure in national politics, and it would be absolutely pointless for the Labour Party to go out acting on very little evidence… saying; “Well, that’s what we’re going to do with Cameron.” It’s worth just taking your time.
Ladies and gentlemen, my raucous laughter woke the children… next door.
Iraq’s future – and ours – depends greatly on us calling Tony Blair to account for his conduct before, during and after the invasion. It’s the only way to stop this kind of thing happening again.
I even emailed David Cameron about this a few weeks ago. The guts of this letter read as follows:
Dear David,
If your plan is to wait Blair out until those who follow behind him become unelectable, then you should be aware that I too will be waiting… waiting there on the other side, determined to highlight your hypocrisy.
You know the one thing that holds this country back. You know the one thing that needs to be addressed before we can move forward.
Every day you wait to address this matter undermines your moral authority on the subject.
I write to you now to ask you – politely – to address the one matter that made your predecessor wait long enough for *him* to look a fool.
The reply came not from Cameron, but his staff. It read as follows:
I can assure you that David Cameron is absolutely determined to hold this government to account.
Fine. Then let him show that determination. He can start by signing Early Day Motion 1088.
